The Best and Worst Moments of the 2012 Oscars

It was refreshing, smart and funny, and the show only ran 10 minutes over! The 84th Annual Academy Awards came and conquered, and it’s nice to see that the ceremony that celebrates the world's greatest entertainers can actually entertain us, as well.
This year’s Oscars captured the true essence of what makes this awards show the best in the business. After years of annoying us with new formats and unqualified hosts, this year every detail was perfected (despite a few audio issues), including the classy stage design, the noteworthy odes to classic film moments, and yes, Billy Crystal’s double-tail tuxedo. Read on for some of our favorite, and least favorite, moments of the 2012 Oscars.
Billy Crystal is back! We're kind of glad that whole Eddie Murphy thing fell through, otherwise we wouldn't have gotten to see Billy Crystal kiss George Clooney so tenderly. There is a reason he's hosted the Oscars eight times, and he reminded us why for his ninth gig. That is precisely the kind of class and humor that’s been missing from the show for years. So sorry, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, James Franco and Anne Hathaway - move over for a true showman (and he doesn't need a partner, either!). His witty one-liners and deadpan side comments kept the audience laughing the whole way through.
Getting the technical awards done earlyFinally, they figured out that for the most part, the audience just doesn't care about these awards. By moving them up to the start, we could hand those puppies out and move on to other things. Not to tarnish the achievement by any means (we love and respect films, and all that goes into making them), but often these lesser-known categories can bog down the telecast, causing the audience at home to see if “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” is playing on repeat (which, of course, it is).  Besides, that time was well spent discussing the awesomeness of Billy Crystal. Well done, show producers.
